SNIA: Storage Management Initiative With Delivery of Education

Formal SMI-S Developers Course and Features Educational Activities at
Storage Networking World

(16.04.03) - In its ongoing effort to accelerate the adoption of the Storage Networking Industry Association's Storage Management Initiative Specification (SNIA SMI-S), the Storage Management Forum (SMF) introduced new education programs for vendors, developers and end users. In addition to the multiple activities that are planned for Storage Networking World (SNW) this month in Phoenix, Arizona, the SMF is offering the first SMI-S training course, "SMI-S Developers Education." The course is planned for May 19th through the 23rd at the SNIA Technology Centre in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

"This first offering will focus on training developers to leverage this new technology specification," stated Julie Ryan, the SNIA's SMF Education Committee chair. "When developers are properly trained, development times are reduced so products can get to market more quickly."

The SMF will host several SMI activities at the SNW conference next week in Phoenix, Arizona (see www.storagenetworkingworld.com for details ). Those activities include the CIM-SAN-2 Developers Demonstration, a main-stage panel presentation that addresses standards efforts to date, and two storage management sessions during the SNIA Education Committee tutorials.

Multi-vendor, heterogeneous management interoperability demonstrations of the new SMI-S will be on display in the "SNIA Delivering Standards-Based Management Solutions" area. Known as "CIM-SAN-2," this demonstration represents a snapshot of the SMI-S management interoperability implementation and testing that is ongoing at the SNIA Technology Centre.

Industry leaders will gather for a panel presentation titled 360° Perspective on Storage Standards – A Dialogue Focused on How the SMI-S Meets Business Needs. The moderated discussion will examine the emerging SMI-S from multiple perspectives, focusing on the value of standardisation. "Management solutions for the continued growth of information and multi-vendor heterogeneous SANs are top priorities facing the IT community today," said Sheila Childs, chair of the SNIA Board of Directors. "Through the work of the SMI, the SNIA is on an aggressive path to develop the necessary standards and, more importantly, the infrastructure required to ensure rapid adoption of the new SMI-S."

The SMF will host two storage management sessions during the SNIA Education Committee tutorials. "These sessions represent a high-level overview of SMI-S and more detail on the underlying CIM / WBEM technology", said Mark Carlson, chair of the SNIA Technical Steering Committee for SMI. "We will discuss the fundamentals of how this new specification works, and its importance in the world of standards."

The SMF also plans to host a vendor outreach program to further strengthen standards in the industry by reviewing the status of the SMI program while addressing future requirements.  "Vendor commitment to the SNIA SMI-S is strong," said Roger Reich, chair of the SNIA SMI Committee. "The SNIA is working diligently to accelerate the adoption of this specification."
