IBM Enhances Windows XP Wireless Security IBM
Security: Peace of Mind
IBM is
the first PC manufacturer to integrate a security chip into a PC. Windows XP
supports the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem (http://www5.pc.ibm.com/ww/me.nsf/WW-webdocs/Information+Brief:+IBM+Client+Security+Solutions)
, which is available on select NetVista and ThinkPad systems and consists of
the integrated security chip and IBM Client Security Software (download
required) to provide security not previously available.
·
The
integrated security chip (http://www.pc.ibm.com/ww/resources/security/securitychip.html) provides hardware-based protection of
critical security information, including passwords, encryption keys and
electronic credentials.
·
The
security software (http://www.pc.ibm.com/ww/resources/security/secdownload.html)
provides the interface between security-aware applications and the
functionality of the chip. It also supports the latest peripheral security
devices that control access to the PC itself.

The IBM
Embedded Security Subsystem is compatible with the industry-standard 802.1x
protocol for enhanced wireless security. With native support in Windows XP,
802.1x introduces an Extended Authentication Protocol (EAP)that enhances the
802.11b wireless standard by utilizing dynamic, per-session encryption and
authentication. The IBM Embedded Security Subsystem strengthens the 802.1x by
protecting the keys used for certificate-based EAP authentication and key
exchange. More
